PETALING JAYA, 26TH AUGUST 2022 – As Malaysia will be celebrating its 65th Merdeka Day next week, two local graduates Dayana Aripin and Evva Lim Yee Fah have made Malaysia proud at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design (GSD) in Massachusetts, USA.
After beating 13 countries across Asia, Dayana Aripin from Universiti Sains Malaysia, and Evva Lim Yee Fah from Taylor’s University, were ultimately crowned winners of the Asia Young Designers Awards (AYDA) 2022/2021 in the Architectural Category and Interior Design Category, respectively.
For the Architectural category, Dayana’s project entitled “Microhousing Within Heritage Context”, aims to uplift the lives of her fellow Penangnites in the face of rapid urbanizations and demographic changes within its local community.
Meanwhile, under the Interior Design Category, Evva’s project entitled “Wo.Men”, which means “us” in Mandarin, envisioned a safe haven and empowerment centre for women.
Yaw Seng Heng, Group Managing Director of Nippon Paint said, “We are proud of both Dayana and Evva who have the opportunity to attend Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design (Harvard GSD), a prestigious university in the world. “Through numerous experiential learning opportunities and once-in-a-lifetime initiatives, this educational outreach program strives to cultivate the next generation of talents by pushing their ideas farther beyond the norm. This is important especially in Asia as we want to motivate young designers to quickly adapt to consumer’s changing needs while maximizing commercial values and catering for the region’s rapidly expanding communities,” said Yaw.
Evva and Dayana said, “We are proud to represent Malaysia at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design (Harvard GSD). At Harvard, we got the opportunity to see other countries’ designs as well as showcase our local designs. This has motivated us to be better architects and designers as we learn to incorporate environment, history, and culture all together in one design.”
Launching in 2008, ADYA Awards serves as a platform to sharpen the design skills of our young generations and elevate design standards in changing the world for a better future. To empower these design students, we aim to be the leading voice for building architects and interior designers globally by bringing them through a holistic journey through coaching and mentoring sessions by experienced lecturers and industry players.
As part of Nippon Paint’s collaboration with Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design (Harvard GSD), in preserving with ADYA’s objective to product designers who are active advocates for their society.
The grand prize winner of each category will receive an all-expenses-paid 3 weeks trip to attend the university’s Design Discovery Program, valued at up to USD10,000.
On top of that, participants can also look forward to being awarded with cash prizes in other categories such as the Nippon Paint Color Award, Best Sustainable Design Award and the Best Design Impact Award.
Added to this as believers of long-term collaborations between Harvard GSD and Nippon Paint also provides students with the funds, they need to pursue their education at Harvard GSD through the Gennosuke Obata Fellowship Fund.
